Podcast: Meagan Navarro on ‘The Seventh Curse’
February 24th, 2024 | By Matthew Monagle
Sometimes, you’re in the mood for a movie, and sometimes, you’re in the mood for a half-dozen movies all rolled into one. In this episode of the Certified Forgotten podcast, horror journalist Meagan Navarro (Bloody Disgusting) explains why Ngai Choi Lam‘s The Seventh Curse might be right up there with the director’s more famous Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky in terms of sheer directorial audacity.

There’s not much that Dr. Yuen Chen-hsieh (Chin Siu-ho) cannot do. One part doctor, two parts martial arts expert and world explorer, Dr. Yuen is the first person both police and diplomats call when they need a little help. But when he begins to suffer from an evil blood curse, Dr. Yuen must return to Thailand and the mysterious “worm tribe” that placed this hex upon him. With help from confidant Wisely (Chow Yun-fat) and local freedom fighter Black Dragon (Dick Wei), Dr. Yuen will reverse his curse — and maybe save the world in the process.
In this short excerpt from the podcast, Navarro explains why everyone — and yes, she does mean everyone — needs to make time for The Seventh Curse.
“It’s a kitchen sink movie. What kind of movie do you want? The Seventh Curse has it. It’s in there. You want adventure? It’s in there. You want a little romance? It’s in there — maybe lust, that’s in there. Gore, horror… you like Raiders of the Lost Ark, Big Trouble in Little China, a little Alien, all of that? It’s in there.“
