They say good things come in threes; that's certainly true when talking about podcast guests. After previously joining us for conversations on Teenage Cocktail and Alleluia! The Devil's Carnival, BJ Colangelo joins an exclusive club of three-time podcast guests at Certified Forgotten. And for her three-peat, Colangelo picked Michael Davis's Monster Man, a low-budget horror film that shows the best and the worst 2000s Hollywood had to offer.
When Adam (Eric Jungmann) sets off on a cross-country road trip, his goals are simple: crash the wedding and get the girl. Soon, though, Adam finds himself the chauffeur for two unexpected passengers. First is Harley (Justin Urich), the asshole ex-friend who stows aways in the back seat, and then comes Sarah (Aimee Brooks), a hitchhiker with a thing for cute nerds. But as the trio settles into their raunchy road trip vibes, Adam becomes the target redneck monster truck driver – and soon the three friends will need to fight for their survival or run afoul of a real-life Gravedigger.
In this short excerpt from the podcast, BJ explains how Monster Man went from a running joke to a beloved standard in the Colangelo household:
The first time we watched it, we were like, this is the worst piece of shit we've ever seen. This movie is terrible. And then it became a running gag. One of our friends bought us all copies of it on DVD for Christmas one year, just as a troll gift, and we started watching it more and more. And the more I watch this movie, and the more I make other people watch this movie, the more my, 'This movie sucks,' has turned into, 'I think I love this movie.' Not because I think it is good, not because I think that it is brilliant writing or great special effects or anything of that sort, but because of what this movie represents in terms of 2003. I am utterly obsessed with it.
