After the breakout critical and commercial success of Barbarian and Weapons, Zach Cregger has earned the right to do whatever he wants - especially if "whatever he wants" involves a successful adaptation of Resident Evil, the latest attempt at adaptation for a series that has yet to find its footing among fans of the game. And while Certified Forgotten cohosts Matt Donato and Matthew Monagle disagree on how good it is, they can at least agree that it is good.
Bryan (Austin Abrams) is having a busy night, bouncing between tense conversations with his pregnant girlfriend and harsh road conditions for his latest delivery. So when a woman wanders in front of his car, he tries to do the right thing and drive her to the nearest hospital. But this is Resident Evil, which means her injuries aren’t quite as they appear, and soon Bryan is running through the streets of Raccoon City trying to avoid hordes of the undead. Is he the hero of this story? Or just another doomed NPC? Half the fun is finding out.
In this short excerpt, Monagle shares why his current playthrough of Silent Hill: Townfall made him appreciate the less-is-more approach that Cregger took with his Resident Evil adaptation:
I love that I am so underpowered in the survival horror universe. I love the fact that most of what I am doing right now is looking at my little radio that tells me when there are creatures nearby, and using that to figure out where or not I can dart out across the street. Most of what we get when we play video games is not having enough of anything. Not having enough health packs, not having enough bullets, not being able to do things.
