It's been quite a ride for Kate Dolan's Soulm8te. Once designed as a spinoff from the M3GAN universe, Soulm8te was shelves after the box office struggles of M3GAN 2.0, only to slip onto video-on-demand this past weekend with an Obsession-esque new trailer. Did Dolan's film deserve to be put on mothballs? That's the discuss we have in this week's episode of the Certified Forgotten podcast.

And for this week's episode of the podcast, we're doing things a little differently. Instead of a straight 30-minute chunk on Soulm8te, we recorded our episode in two sections: 20 minutes of discussion before we watched the movie and 20 minutes of discussion afterwards. This format is designed to show us what we think we think going into the film, highlighting some of the production controversy around the movie as well as our feelings about the M3GAN franchise as a whole.
And the best part is? If you haven't seen Soulm8te yet, you can listen to the first-half of the podcast without fear of spoilers, because we hadn't seen it either. Once we come back, though, we talk about whether our assumptions were right or wrong. Is Soulm8te best viewed as an extension of the franchise's campy approach to science fiction and horror? Or is Kate Dolan's movie better understood as a big-budget modernization of '90s erotic thrillers? How you answer that question will pretty much determine whether you liked the movie or not.
In this short except from the episode, Matt Donato shares his feelings on the film:
I was excited for the concept, but everything that has happened after the announcement has given me no faith. If we want to start with how I'm coming into Soulm8te, the journey for this movie has been abysmal. There's writing on the wall that I can't ignore.
